ABSTRACT
Calibration and metrological characterization of digital sensors and sensor network, based on MEMS/NEMS technology, is a metrological challenge, due to the lack of Standards, conformity of technical procedures, and proper sensitivity parameters of digital sensors.
Nevertheless, MEMS sensors and network are largely used in industrial processes controls (e.g. by monitoring performance degradation for defects prevention, or managing the automation), as well as for many other applications, such as environmental, seismic and infrastructures survey, navigation and positioning systems, remote surgery and diagnoses, health feedback survey and environmental/natural hazard.
In these applications, data quality is of paramount importance, in particular for managing big data and data aggregation in extensive sensor networks. Data quality assessment of sensor networks depends on traceable calibration of digital sensors in nodes, metrological treatment of sensor network as a whole, remote self-calibration, data fusion in network systems and the overall uncertainty budget management.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS
Alessandro Schiavi is a researcher at the National Institute of Metrological Research (INRIM, Italy), within the Applied Metrology and Engineering Division. MSc degree in Physics, he is responsible for Vibrations, primary and secondary standard calibration. He is nominated expert within the Consultative Committee for Acoustics, Ultrasound and Vibration (CCAUV) of BIPM; member of the Technical Committee for Acoustics, Ultrasound and Vibration (TC-AUV) of EURAMET; member of the Technical Committee 22 of IMEKO (IMEKO TC22 “Vibration Measurement”). He is Adjunct Professor at Politecnico di Torino: Noise control Engineering. Participating into national and international joint research projects (EMRP, EMPIR, PRIN, Industrial); his main research fields are vibration fundamental metrology, environmental and mechanical vibrations, structural acoustics, mechanical and physical properties of materials.
Ada Fort, received the M.Sc. degree in Electronic Engineering, in 1989 and the Ph.D. Degree in Nondestructive Testing in 1992, both from the University of Florence, Italy. She is currently Associate Professor in Electrical and Electronic Measurements at the Department of Information Engineering and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Siena, Italy. Her research interests concern modelling and developing of sensors with special focus on chemical sensors. She works at the development of measurement systems based on sensors, monitoring systems for industry and sensors networks.
Lorenzo Parri, received the MSc in Electronics and Communications Engineering at the University of Siena, Italy, in 2017 where he also got a PhD in Information Engineering and Science in 2021.
He is currently a research fellow at the Department of Information Engineering and Mathematics of the University of Siena, his research interests include the design of gas measurement systems, electronic systems for industrial application and condition monitoring, design of embedded microcontroller-based devices and development of sensors networks.
Elia Landi, received the MSc in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the University of Siena, Italy, in 2017 and he received the PhD in Information Engineering in 2021.
He is currently a Research Associate at the Department of Information Engineering and Mathematics of the University of Siena. His current research interests include the design and testing of measurement systems for vibration analysis, design and development of modular test benches for electromechanical parts durability and testing, study and design of measurement systems related to turbomachine condition monitoring.
