Data quality: a new imperative for measurement systems in the Industry4.0 era

ABSTRACT
Industry 4.0 has pushed on-line quality control to be distributed along the production line, rather than concentrated at the end of the line as it used to be. This shift in quality approach makes it possible to detect and react to anomalies before the product/component is delivered and becomes mandatory to target both quality control on 100% of the production and hence zero defect manufacturing. However, in a real production scenario, availability of data does not itself guarantee an effective information build-up. Reliability of data hence becomes the real problem to be tackled.
To ensure reliability, sensors, actuators and instruments need to provide adequate levels of accuracy and precision. This means, for instance, that they should adapt to/compensate for adverse physical conditions under which they are forced to operate (e.g. varying temperature).
The Industry 4.0 compliant quality control systems should then be designed to exhibit real-time adaptive behaviors to keep measurement uncertainty under control even in case of variations of process or product or instrument parameters. Furthermore, processing of data allows to derive synthetic quality indicators, as well as to implement self-diagnosis and self-calibration to maximize the confidence level of the measurement system output and of the diagnostic judgment.
This session aims to collect papers describing measurement systems and quality control stations capable of ensuring reliability of data provided, as well as papers dealing with the strategies to take into account issues of uncertainty and confidence level of measured data, calibration of measurement systems, smart management of sensors, etc.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS
Paolo Chiariotti currently holds a researcher position in Mechanical and Thermal Measurements at the Faculty of Engineering of Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM).
He received the M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2007 and the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering and Management from Università Politecnica delle Marche in 2011.
His research interests refer to the development of innovative measurement techniques, with special focus on non-contacts methods (ranging from vibro-acoustic to machine vision) and indirect approaches (virtual-sensors).
He is author/coauthor of more than 60 papers, 2 patent and 1 book chapter and serves as reviewer of several international journals.
Dr Chiariotti is also member of IEEE, for which he chairs the technical committee on Vibration and acoustic sensors of the IEEE Italy Sensor chapter, and SEM (Society for Experimental Mechanics).
Nicola Paone is Full professor of Mechanical and Thermal Measurements at the Faculty of Engineering of Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM).
After graduation in mechanical engineering at Univ. of Ancona (1986) he was a researcher at von Karman Institute for Fluid dynamics (Brussels, 1987) and a research engineer at FIAT Research Center (Turin, 1988); during these first years of his career he started research on development and application of optical and vision based measurement techniques for geometric and kinematic quantities, among which Particle Image Velocimetry, high speed imaging and laser diffraction. In 1989 he became researcher at Univ. of Ancona and in 1992 professor at Univ. of L’Aquila, developing research on optical measurement techniques for mechanical quantities, in particular laser Doppler vibrometry, robot vision, infra-red vision and photoelasticity, applied to different sectors. Since 2001 he is full professor at Università Politecnica delle Marche.
In addition to several national funded projects, he has been scientific responsible of 4 European Projects, 3 of which related to manufacturing, in particular to advanced measurement technologies for quality and process control.
He has authored 58 papers on international journals and more than 110 papers at international and national conferences, he is reviewer and evaluator for different international and national funding agencies and referee of several international journals.
Paolo Castellini is Full Professor of Mechanical and Thermal Measurements at the Faculty of Engineering of Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM).
He the PhD degree in 1996 at University of Padova, Italy, and then joined the Mechanical Department of Univ. of Ancona in 1997. Since 2011 he is Associate Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Mathematical Sciences at the Polytechnic University of Marche, in which he teaches Mechanical and Thermal Measurements and Testing.
Prof. Paolo Castellini has more than 24 years activity in the development and application of instrumentation for mechanical measurements in dynamic analysis and vibro-acoustic.
Paolo Castellini is also active in several EU funded project. He was the coordinator of a CleanSky EU project and of a European Industrial Doctorate.
His research interests are related to non-contact mechanical measurement techniques, mainly based on laser and microphone arrays.
Member of SEM (Society for Experimental Mechanics), he is author of more than 200 papers in International journals and conferences, and also serves as reviewer of international peer reviewed journals.
