ABSTRACT

The use of fiber optic sensors (FOSs) has gained broad acceptance in many industrial applications and growing interest in healthcare and clinical branches. This technology allows developing sensors with high performance in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, and bandwidth, able to perform distributed measurements, as well as suitable for applications in harsh environments. These features and the possibility to develop small-sized sensing elements, make FOSs an emerging solution for monitoring physical parameters in industrial applications and in clinical practice.
This special session is devoted to the description of metrological properties of FOS as well as on novel techniques and applications of these sensors in industry and healthcare. The session also aims at giving an opportunity of interaction for scientists, researchers, and clinicians focusing on the development, characterization and use of FOSs.

TOPICS

Paper submissions are welcome on (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • New techniques for metrological characterization of FOSs;
  • FOSs applications in healthcare;
  • FOSs applications in industry;
  • Techniques of distributed measurements and applications in industry and healthcare;
  • Physiological monitoring of FOSs;
  • Health state monitoring by FOSs;
  • Optical fiber biosensors

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS

Taesung Kim Currently, Full Professor of School of Mechanical Engineering at SKKU, received the Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering (Seoul National University, 1994), the Master's degree and the Ph.D. in Mechanical engineering (University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus, 1998 and 2002). His research interests include the design and development of bio and gas sensors and the use of fiber optic-based sensor in medical applications.

Daniele Tosi Currently, Associate professor at Nazarbayev University (School of Engineering and Digital Sciences) and Head of Biosensors and Bioinstrumeents Lab (National Laboratory Astana). He received the B.Eng. and M.Eng. degrees in Telecommunication Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino in 2004, 2006, and 2010, respectively. His research activity includes optical fiber sensors and biosensors, distributed sensors, sensors micro-fabrication, sensors applications in medicine, and biophotonics. He is Associate Editor of IEEE Sensors Journal since 2017 and received the IEEE Sensors Early Career Award in 2018.

Emiliano Schena Currently, Associate Professor of Measurements and Biomedical Instrumentation at Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma. Earned a Master of Science (2006) and a Ph.D. degree (2009) in Biomedical Engineering at the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma. His research interests focus on the design and development of sensors based on fiber optic technology, and on the design of wearable systems for vital signs monitoring.
