ABSTRACT
IoT devices, embedded wireless sensors, and actuators are increasingly used to build Industrial Solutions even a large-scale. However, the rapid prototyping and practical deployment of IIoT applications still prove to be cumbersome and not sufficiently automated.
Even state-of-the-art algorithms and protocols need to be carefully tuned manually in order to adapt to the often harsh environmental conditions and/or to the application requirements.
The purpose of this special session is to bring together members from different research communities and industrial practitioners to systematically explore the challenges, issues, and opportunities in the research, design, and engineering of IIoT, usually subjected to constraint soft energy autonomy and advanced near-sensor processing. Rapid Prototyped solutions and real-world experiments or deployments are the focus of this session. Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit original contributions that aim to tackle the development and deployment of Industrial IoT applications in the real world.
High quality original technical articles are solicited, describing advances in Rapid-prototyping IIoT, enabling technologies, as well as those which describe practical deployments and implementation experiences.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS
Davide Brunelli (M'10, SM'16) received his M.S. (cum laude) and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 2002 and 2007, respectively.
He is currently an associate professor at the University of Trento, Italy.
His research interests include IoT and distributed lightweight unmanned aerial vehicles, the development of new techniques of energy scavenging for low-power embedded systems and energy-neutral wearable devices.
He was leading industrial cooperation activities with Telecom Italia, ENI, and STMicroelectronics.
He has published more than 200 papers in international journals or proceedings of international conferences.
He is an ACM member and a senior IEEE member.
Elisabetta Farella, Ph.D., is the lead researcher of the Energy Efficient Embedded Digital Architectures (E3DA) unit at the Fondazione Bruno Kessler in Trento, Italy. Her research is in the field of energy-independent embedded systems that are, at the same time, equipped with artificial on-board intelligence. Examples of such systems are Wireless Sensor Networks, wearable electronics, Internet of Things from the point of view of devices equipped with smart sensors and actuators. These technologies are used in various application fields from motor rehabilitation to human-machine interaction, especially in smart cities and communities. She worked since 2014 as coordinator of the research activities on-body sensor and actuators networks, smart objects, and tangible interfaces at the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering (DEI) at the University of Bologna (www.dei.unibo.it) within the group of Prof. Luca Benini. From Spring 2001 to the end of 2005 she was a research fellow at CINECA Visit Lab (https://www.cineca.it/). From 2006 to 2010 she was research supervisor at T3lab (www.t3lab.it) of 3 groups of researchers working on embedded systems (wireless sensor networks, ambient assisted living, RFID). Elisabetta participates with different roles in several National and International projects (e.g. EU projects), cooperating with industries and academies.
