ABSTRACT

The field of sport and physical activity is rapidly changing according to emerging opportunities fostered by technological development. This implies the development of new training and competition paradigms, the involvement of new stakeholders (e.g. data analysts), and the availability of a big amount of information on the health and behavior of exercise practitioners. Given the fundamental role of sport and physical activity at different levels (socioeconomic, health and entertainment), sports industries have a variety of opportunities to penetrate the market. However, current open challenges include sensors data management, the development of sensors and techniques specifically designed for sport and physical activity, the selection of relevant variables, parameters and metrics, the identification of metrological standards, and the development of efficient services to improve performance and fitness and to reduce the risk of injury and illness. This special session welcomes original contributions aiming at facing these and other open challenges in the field of sport and physical activity.

TOPICS

Submissions are welcomed on (but not limited to):

  • Physiological sensors and techniques
  • Sensors and techniques for motion capture and biomechanics
  • Reliability, validity and accuracy of sports sensors
  • Wearables and Body Sensor Networks
  • Variables, parameters and metrics for exercise monitoring
  • Signal processing techniques and sensors data management
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Tests and exercise protocols for the validation of measurement systems and algorithms
  • Applications in the field of sport and physical activity
  • Wireless sensor networks and IoT

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS

Dr. Andrea Nicolò received his BSc (2009), MSc (2011) and Ph.D. in Sports, Exercise and Ergonomics (2015) from the University of Rome “Foro Italico”. He is currently a post-doc researcher at the University of Rome “Foro Italico”. His research focuses on endurance physiology and performance, with special attention to the mechanisms and practical applications underlying the control of breathing during exercise. He has worked for different research projects funded by major national and international sports companies, with the aim of developing new exercise tests and training metrics, and of validating training devices and algorithms. He is currently the Chair of the “Sports Sensors” technical committee of the Italy Chapter of the IEEE Sensors Council.

Dr. Elena Bergamini received the MSc in Biomedical Engineering (2006) from the Politecnico di Milano and a joint Ph.D. (2011) in Biongineering/Biomécanique et Ingénierie pour la Santé from the University of Bologna and Arts et Métiers ParisTech. Since 2011 she has been with the University of Rome “Foro Italico”, where she is currently an Assistant Professor. Her research concerns the development and application of methods for the quantification of persons’ motor function, both in clinical and sports contexts, with reference to the use of wearable magneto-inertial sensors. She serves as academic editor for PlosOne. She is secretary of the Directory Board of the Italian Society of Human Movement Analysis in Clinics (SIAMOC) and Chair of the “Sensors for Biomechanics” technical committee of the Italy Chapter of the IEEE Sensors Council.

Dr. Carlo Massaroni received his BSc (2010) and MSc (2012) in Biomedical Engineering and Ph.D. in Bioengineering (2017) from Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma (UCBM). He is currently is Assistant Professor at UCBM. His research interests are focused on the design, development and assessment of sensors, measuring systems and devices for physiological measurements, with particular emphasis on the design of wearable and unobtrusive systems for the measurement of respiratory and cardiac parameters, tests of available technologies for non-invasive measurement in the medical field, fiber optics for development of sensors and measuring chains for medical field. He is a member of the IEEE, IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology, ISB, ESB and IET. He is currently the Chair of the “Wearable Sensors” technical committee of the IEEE Sensors Italy Chapter and Associate Member of the "Wearable Biomedical Sensors & Systems" technical committee of the IEEE EMB.
