MiniDrone Competition

The MathWorks Minidrone Competition is a competition aimed at introducing students to Model-Based Design using Simulink.

For the participants, the competition is divided into two rounds:

• Round 1 Simulation Round. Teams will work virtually on designing a Minidrone line follower algorithm. Teams will need to use their modeling skills to refine a Simulink Model.
• Round 2 Simulation and Hardware Deployment Round. The teams that qualify from the virtual Round 1 will be invited to the Round 2 live event. Teams will deploy their Simulink model at the live event on the Parrot Mambo Minidrone hardware using the Simulink Support Package for Parrot Minidrones. Organizers will provide Parrot Minidrones and a large arena to flight drones in safety.

The teams would need to complete the line follower track first in both Round 1 and Round 2.

The Round 1 competition will be an online competition, lasting from 05/04/2019 to 05/05/2019 (1 month). Among all the submissions, up to 10 teams most promising submissions will be selected and teams' members will be invited to participate to the 2-day live hackathon in Naples.

The competition is open to all students (high-school, bachelor, master, Ph.D.) from all-over the world, without any limitation on age or studying field.

The use of MATLAB 2019a is compulsory to use Simulink® Support Package for PARROT® Minidrones.

The Mathworks will also provide a free MATLAB and Simulink full-functionality trial license for this challenge at submission.

The following prizes will be awarded for the Round 2 of the competition:

1. First Place: 500 $
2. Second Place: 300 $
3. Third Place: 200 $

Moreover, the MetroInd4.0&IoT committee will further award 100 € to each of the top-three best performing teams for the Round 1 of the competition.

Winners will be awarded during the workshop closing ceremony on the 6th June 2019.

The Organization reserves the right to make any changes to "The Mathworks Minidrones Competition" at any time without notice.

The Online Round is open to everyone, without limitation on the number of participants. Team could be made up to 5 students. Teams declared winner of the First Round will be invited in Naples (Italy) for the Live Round, that will be held during the IEEE MetroInd4.0 Workshop,on the 5th and 6th June 2019. Trip and accommodation cost will not be covered by the organizers.
